Strenghtening Orobie Bergamasche Alps ecological network

It is widely recognised that one of the major threats to biodiversity conservation is habitat fragmentation. Even the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN) asserts that an approach based only on protected areas is not enough to guarantee an effective preservation of species, nor to maintain their genetic vitality

To respond to this need, the project " Strengthening the ecological network of Orobie Bergamasche Alps” has been submitted to Fondazione Cariplo, which decided to support it. The project brings together the Orobie Bergamasche Park, the Mountain Community Valle Seriana, the municipalities of Parre and Oltressenda Alta and WWF Italy, which Eliante works with.

The aim of the project is to enhance the ecological network of Orobie Bergamasche Alps, a key area to the implementation of the Lombardy Regional Ecological Network (REN).

The inhabitants of the corridor

There are many species and habitats worth of protection in this part of Lombardy. Within this area there are eight Sites of Community Interest and two Special Protection Areas, as well as the Orobie Bergamasche Park. Here there are native species deserving special protection, such as different varieties of orchid, amphibians like the Italian Crested Newt, the Yellow-bellied Toad and the Italian Frog, birds like the Tree Pipit, the Whinchat and the Wheatear.

The objectives of the project

Therefore, it is essential to preserve these ecological corridors and ensure their continuity through targeted actions that the project is going to identify and put into practice, including:

  • Strengthening of amphibian populations through the recovery of pools and the development of new pasture-pools;
  • Upgrading open corridors through the rehabilitation and refurbishment of pastures, as well as the expansion of existing clearings;
  • Maintenance and enhancement of existing ecological corridors;
  • Containment of alien and invasive species;
  • Increasing the level of awareness of local stakeholders.

Eliante will implement the last action; during 2014 meetings will be organized with the local community, schools and tourists to spread the importance of having a well "connected" and vital environment. In addition, Eliante is going to make some proposals of intervention to implement part of an ecological corridor near the river Serio.
